Hired as a contractor to build an interactive Global Internet Observer for US Air Force Cyber Command, then invited to join the Custom Analytics group full-time. Led a number of projects for large customers including US DHS, Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency, General Motors, USAA, and Apple. Designed and built interactive reporting dashboards leveraging legacy XML/SOAP web services and modern JSON XmlHttpRequest. Investigated Internet-scale data signals producing terabytes of log lines per day to discover anomalies, model traffic, and yield insights for security and traffic management. Developed keen data-wrangling skills involving pulling from multiple sources, cleaning and normalizing data, conducting exploratory analysis, and developing analytic and visualization techniques to communicate key findings. Joined and later led the LGBTQ+ out@akamai Employee Resource Group, organizing events, winning policy and practice changes, and tripling membership. Created and ran Custom Analytics’ internship program, supervising post-doc scholars conducting sophisticated Internet research.

Designed and built interactive Flash applications for delivery via CD-ROM, kiosk, and the Web. Created HTML and Flash-based education and training materials. Designed, built, and maintained complex, interactive web sites. Assessed client needs and developed specifications; collaborated with client teams to refine specifications, develop prototypes, and deliver polished interactive products. Participated in all phases of project development and management, from conception to final delivery and implementation.

Instructed mostly mid-career adult students in using Flash’s scripting language to produce complex interactivity and to develop ActionScript that is readable, modular, extensible, maintainable, and reusable. Designed and developed all web sites of the Kurzweil Companies, working directly with founder Ray Kurzweil. Managed a team including an outside design firm, software developers, and content creators to launch KurzweilAI.net, a cutting-edge web site exploring the social impact of future technologies. Coordinated design consultants and a team of developers to create FamilyPractice.com, the leading website for Family Physicians. Built a variety of web-based applications using PHP, server-side Java, MySQL, JavaScript, and HTML. Created original graphics and designs for print publications, book jackets, and multimedia presentations, including producing Ray Kurzweil’s live real-time motion-capture performance at Richard Saul Wurman’s TED 11 conference in Monterey, CA.

Designed, composed, and created web sites as an independent contractor to a variety of medical, educational, and non-profit institutions. Chaired a committee of administrators and faculty at the Harvard Graduate School of Education to reassess the School’s web presence, and then redesigned and rebuilt the School’s web site. Designed and created web sites for the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, Cambridge College, and the video performance art group Noise Laboratories.
